I’m Seeba “Wendy” Sattam — former psychotherapist turned coach, consultant, and recruiter in the mortgage industry — and I created a 7-Day Mortgage Mental Health Check-In for professionals who want to lead with clarity, resilience, and self-awareness in a high-pressure space.
Each day, I’ll post a short insight to help you ground, reflect, and reset.
Day 1: Start Here
Stress and pressure are part of the mortgage industry — deadlines, client needs, market shifts — it can feel overwhelming at times.
But one thing many professionals overlook is how important it is to pause and truly check in with yourself.
When stress hits, take a moment and ask: “What am I really feeling right now?”
Try to notice not only the emotion but also what’s happening in your body.
Is there tightness in your chest?
Are your shoulders tense or shrugged?
Do you feel a lump in your throat or heaviness in your stomach?
These physical sensations are signals — clues to help you understand your emotional state.
Maybe you’re feeling anxious, frustrated, overwhelmed, or even exhausted. And that’s okay. Sometimes it’s a mix of feelings.
You don’t need the perfect word — simply naming your feelings and noticing your body creates space and clarity.
From there, consider what you need:
Maybe it’s taking a short break, journaling your thoughts to process them, or reaching out to a trusted colleague, mentor, or professional for support.
This practice of naming feelings and tuning into your body isn’t just self-care — it’s essential for sustaining your mental and emotional health in a demanding industry.
If you find yourself overwhelmed, start here. It’s a simple step that can make a big difference.
Day 2: Your Nervous System Is Talking — Are You Listening?
We tend to pride ourselves on keeping it together — until we can’t.
In the mortgage industry, it’s easy to chalk up burnout, reactivity, or disconnection to just being “tired” or “busy.” But under the surface, your nervous system is in survival mode. And if you don’t learn to recognize it, it will drive your decisions without you even realizing it.
Stress responses aren’t just emotional — they’re physiological.
- Fight mode might look like irritation, tension, or control.
- Flight might look like mental distraction, overwork, or avoidance.
- Freeze often shows up as feeling stuck, checked out, or overwhelmed.
- Fawn might look like people-pleasing and over-accommodating just to keep the peace.
These aren’t personality flaws — they’re built-in nervous system responses to perceived threat. And the first step to shifting them is noticing when they’re happening.
Today’s mental health check-in is simple but powerful:
- When something feels off, don’t force yourself through it. Pause.
- Ask: What is my body trying to protect me from right now?
- Then breathe.
Three slow, intentional breaths can begin to bring your system back into balance.
Your nervous system isn’t the enemy — it’s your internal compass. Learn to listen to it.
Day 3: Overfunctioning Isn’t Leadership — It’s a Warning Sign
Overfunctioning is one of the most socially accepted forms of emotional overwhelm in the mortgage space. It’s praised. Rewarded. Even promoted.
But here’s what it really means:
- You’re doing more than your share to hold things together.
- You feel responsible for others’ outcomes and emotions.
- You ignore your own limits because you’re afraid of being seen as “not enough.”
It’s not sustainable.
If your nervous system is always running on adrenaline and urgency, eventually your performance declines — even if your effort doesn’t.
Today, take an honest look at where you’re overfunctioning:
- Where are you stepping in too much?
- What would happen if you gave 5% less energy to something that’s draining you?
- Can you let others carry their weight without stepping in to fix?
Healthy leadership includes boundaries. Clarity. Breathing room.
You don’t have to prove your worth through exhaustion.
Day 4: Boundaries Are Energy Management — Not Rejection
In this industry, people often mistake boundaries for resistance. But healthy boundaries aren’t about shutting people out — they’re about managing your capacity.
When you overextend without pause, you eventually resent the very people you’re trying to help.
So today, I want you to reframe boundaries as energy protection.
Not:
- “I don’t care.”
- “I’m not available to help.”
But rather:
- “I care enough to be honest about what I can give.”
- “I’m more useful when I’m not running on empty.”
Try this today:
- Communicate one boundary clearly and calmly.
- Protect one time block for yourself (even 15 minutes).
- Say “not right now” instead of a rushed “yes.”
Respecting your limits is not unprofessional — it’s how you stay effective, connected, and well.
Day 5: When Doubt Creeps In — Anchor to What’s Real
It happens to everyone: a deal falls through, someone else gets credit, or the pipeline dries up — and suddenly you feel unsteady.
You wonder: Was I ever actually good at this?
Self-doubt in high-pressure roles is common — but it’s rarely telling the full truth.
Doubt tends to show up when your nervous system is stretched and your sense of identity is overly tied to outcomes.
Here’s your check-in:
- Where are you confusing results with self-worth?
- What feedback have you received in the past that affirms your value?
- What part of you knows you’re still capable — even when the numbers don’t reflect it?
Confidence doesn’t come from everything going right. It comes from knowing who you are, even when things don’t.
Day 6: Your Health Is the Strategy
You are not your volume. You are not your monthly units.
Yes, this industry is production-driven — but underneath it, you are still a human being. And if you don’t protect your health, the entire system breaks down.
Today’s check-in is about returning to basics:
- Are you eating real food — or just caffeine and convenience?
- Are you moving your body at all — even just a walk?
- Are you sleeping enough to recover from the mental load you carry?
This isn’t about optimization. It’s about maintenance. Your body is the container for your work, your focus, your leadership. Treat it like your best asset — because it is.
Day 7: Create Meaning — Don’t Just Manage Output
In the chaos of this industry, it’s easy to go into autopilot. But burnout doesn’t come from working hard — it comes from feeling like the work no longer means anything.
Today, give yourself permission to reconnect with purpose:
- Why did you get into this field in the first place?
- What part of the work still matters to you?
- Who are you impacting — beyond the numbers?
Pray. Meditate. Journal. Do whatever helps you ground and reflect. But pause long enough to come back to the “why.”
Then, set an intention:
- Today, I lead with clarity.
- Today, I speak calmly and clearly even when under pressure.
- Today, I take care of myself the way I care for others.
You’re not just managing files. You’re shaping lives — including your own.
You are your best asset. Take care of you.
